Pillars of Strength – A Special Day for K

K is a very special chocolate Lab that is a very special fur-baby to KB, a blogger who does amazing work chronicling her life in the Rocky Mountains. KB posts videos and pictures of bears, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, elk, etc., etc., and some of the most amazing mountain views we have ever had the pleasure of seeing. If you have never found/read her blog, we strongly recommend going – HERE.

We started reading their blog last year and have realized that K is her heart dog, a faithful canine companion on all of her adventures. Unfortunately, K is facing some very challenging health issues and has her next round of chemotherapy on Friday, February 17. Any of you who are animal lovers and have faced the same situation know what a difficult time this is for KB. So a group of us have conspired to be KB's Pillars of Strength as they go through this time, feel free to grab the badge and join the hop. We all know that the more we have on the Pillar the more Strength we provide.

The reason we have decided to be a Pillar of Strength to K and KB is because we know first-paw what it is like to have a fur-baby be diagnosed with the horrible “C” word. Our Cleo was diagnosed with cancer on September 1, 2011 and she made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge on September 20, 2011, just 19 days after we had received the devastating news of this horrible disease. I have lost close friends to cancer, but for some reason her diagnosed hit me like a ton of bricks. I couldn’t breath, my heart was racing, my knees were weak and I really didn't know how families get through this (human or canine). So what did I do, I turned to my blog and my blog friends, they were there for me and they knew first hand what I was going through (some may have not have experienced Canine Cancer) but everyone in blogville knows what it is like to receive devastating news of about our fur-babies no matter what we are facing.

This is Cleo our heart dog and the one that showed our hearts to "RESCUE"

I know there are a lot of great success stories on Canine Cancer, unfortunately mine is not one of them. Cleo's cancer was a very fast growing cancer and once it is found it so far advanced there is not much you can do to help your beloved fur-baby, but hug them tight, snuggle them a little closer and tell them you will do your best to make it alright. Cleo's cancer diagnosed did open my eyes even wider and I realized how much more we need to do to bring the awareness of CANCER to everyone (human or canine).

How Am I Adjusting - One Month

Bella here,

Finally I have been able to sneak this little bitty blue box into my comfort zone (the bed) and get to tell everyone how I am doing in my new home.

I was officially here one month on February 6th. I have to say me thinks, things are going pretty gosh darn good. My first week was a little rough, all though I love my fur-siblings very much we had a few issues with the kibbles (not me, Winston). See I am a pretty laid back girl and still trying to get the hang of how things work in the hound house. I know that Winston has been here the longest and he still had to be reminded that Mom is at the top of the pecking order. BOL

Since I spent so much time on my own in a back yard with nobody to feed me or love me, I am still trying to figure out this whole "house" routine. I have used my doggie door since the first day I came to my fur-ever home. I have never had an accident which, Mom says that is awesome for being an outside dog for 2 years. I don't sleep in a crate anymore, but sleep on a baby bed mattress with a soft doggie cushion on top of it with a nice fleece blanket, next to my momma's side of the bed. I sleep all night long and get up at about 5:00am when Mom gets up. Amiee plays major bitie face with me first thing, she so happy in the mornings and loves to get the day started and I just go along with it. We then gets to go outside to potty and do our business, and when we come back inside Mom has our breakfast all fixed up for us so we can eat and get ready to take our morning nap after Mom goes to work. As soon as Mom leaves we open the bedroom door and run in there and crawl back in bed with Dad for a few more hours of snuggles.

Mom says that each new day brings me a little bit more out of my shell. She has found that I love socks and anything that can come out of the clothes basket (clean or dirty). They will usually make their way out the doggie door or to a very special place on the bed. I like to gather all my things throughout the day and keep them safe with me. I have gained 2 pounds in the month that I have been here. My vetman says that Mom has to be the only one that can get a dog to gain weight on LIGHT dog food. BOL I love to play and lounge outside on our doggie beds with my fur-siblings. We run and play and snuggle together at night after we complete the Basset 500.

Mom and Dad have found that my least favorite time of the day is early evening hours when the sun is setting and it is beginning to get dark outside. Darkness seems to be my weakness and scares me the most. Mom has been trying new things to try to help this transition go smoother for me. One thing she found this weekend was if she places my fleece coat on me around 4:00pm, I seem to do a little better with my transition to darkness. So we are trying this out to see if it works, she thinks my fleece coat is acting somewhat like a “Thunder Shirt” and gives me some security. Actually she has named my fleece coat “Bella’s super duper power coat”, she thinks it gives me super powers to overcome my fears. Me thinks she can be a little silly at times, but hey I go along with it to humor her. BOL

Do I look like I have super powers?

Mom has said that she is so glad that I “Bella” decided to adopt them.

P.S...Mom wants to know if any of my new blog friends can suggest a good place to purchase doggie clothes at. She says I have a few functions coming up and I need some new clothes to wear. Anybody got any good suggestions for online pet clothes?

Awesome Blog Friends

It just amazes me the friends that I and the hounds have met since we began blogging a few years ago. We have to admit that we are getting the hang of this blogging and we try our best to post at least a couple of times a week. We do our best to read all our friends blogs and comment, sometimes we just read and don't comment, then next thing you know we have a comment from that blog, then I feel terrible that I just read and didn't comment, because I just recently found out that blogger can track all your visitors.

We love all our blogging friends but one of our very first blog friends was The Cheesehounds from Louisiana. They have been in the blogging world for a little while when we began following them. At the time we began following them it was Droopy and Callie (The Cheesehounds). Unfortunately Callie has gone to the bridge and is running with Tabby and Cleo having the time of their life and they have since added a few new hounds to the household along with fostering.

Our friendship has grown over the last year, as Momma Cheesehound was a rock for me when we found out that Cleo had cancer and provided me so much comfort and support through it all. We had many conversations on FB, email and even broke down and called and talked in person. It is just so nice to have friends that really fully can understand what it means to own a fur-baby.

We have several different gift exchanges and send stuff back forth for the hounds. This year we sent them a box of things for Christmas, we were late though. BOL Well our humans have such great minds and think a lot alike and the Cheesehounds sent us a gift as well, they were running late. BOL (See great minds think alike, always late)

Well a few weeks ago we got this big box delivered to our front door. Mom seen who it was from and said Oh, you have pressies from The Cheesehounds, but we are really busy this weekend and we don’t’ have time to look into that box yet. So it sat, and sat and sat, then last week she is like holy crap we forgot to open the box that The Cheesehounds sent us. And boy did she feel bad once she got inside that box and seen what was in there. We have told her she should never assume that just because it says The HoundDogs on the address doesn’t mean it is just for the Hounds, there might be something really cool in their for our peep. So here are a few pictures of our pressies we got from The Cheesehounds.

Oh, and this is the Ghost of Cleo again. She was stopping by to see what The Cheesehounds had sent us. This is really too weird, because these shots have been happening all the time since Cleo passed. We don't ever remember seeing these in our pictures before Cleo's passing.

Is this not the most AWESOME present anyone could receive. I just sat and hugged and cried when I opened up this present. We are know searching for the best place in the house to display our Miss Cleo.

It is the most beautiful picture of Cleo that has been carved/itched into wood. The Cheesehounds next door neighbor guy has a wood carving machine and their Momma asked him if he could to a carving of Cleo. It is amazing and looks just like her and it is something I will treasure forever and ever. From what Momma Cheesehound has told me her wonderful husband had one made for her of Callie and she thought I could really use one made of Cleo. She said she thought we have the only two wood carvings the neighbor guys has ever done.

Just blew me away and can't believe I let this box sit for a week before I opened up. That will teach me to think that everyone is just for the hounds.

I cannot wait until the day that I get to meet Momma Cheesehound in person, because I am going to hug her like their is no tomorrow. It just amazes me the friends that I have developed and meet through blogging. It is so awesome.

Mango Minster - 2012 - Official Entry

Last year we entered Cleo, Winston and Amiee in the Cracker Critter category which we felt they fit right into this category for a basset hound any way. It was so much fun, even though we didn't win because we found their are some pretty darn good Cracker Critters out their in blogville.

Will this year, we have had a hard time deciding if we wanted to do individual entries, because Amiee says she is just too Darn Cute, Winston says he is quite Adventures and our newest addition Bella, seems to fit the too Darn Cute category as well. But of course our human has the deciding factor on which category she wants to place us in, no matter how much we voice our opinions. So this year, she did it again.......

Well we pretty sure that we would get some snow sooner or later but we have been enjoying the unseasonable warm temps that we have had in Illinois.

We went from this on Wednesday

To this Thursday morning (12 hours later)

Bella loves the snow just as much as she loves the nice weather. We can tell that she was an outside dog as she loves the cold a lot more than her couch potatoes fur-siblings. She loves to wear her coat outside then switch to a more comfy fleece jacket for in the house. She knows that is really nice to be able to come inside to a nice warm comfy couch after a good ramp in the snow.

Things continue to go well everyone and Bella gets a little more relaxed each day.

We want to thank everyone for the nice well wishes for Bella we believe she was meant to be here with us.

Introducing Bella "Newest HoundDog"

Wordless "?" Wednesday answers below. And this post is not so wordless.

A day before Christmas we were contacted by GABR that they had a 2 year old basset girl that was looking for her forever home. They were wondering if we would be interested in her and if we were ready to open our hearts back up. Well we knew we just needed to get through Christmas after loosing Cleo, because that was her very special Holiday. Well we made it through that day and this sweet little girl was still in the back of our heads so we decided that with the New Year it was time to see if we were ready.

So on Friday, January 6, 2012 we loaded up the BUV with Winston and Amiee and we headed out to Marion, Indiana to meet Bella in her foster home. We left the house at 7:30am and knew we had about a 4-1/2 hour road trip to meet her. Winston and Amiee did wonderful in the BUV and settled down about Farmer City and slept till we made a pit stop and then it was back to sleeping again. It took a little longer to get there since Mr. Garmin decided to take us on very scenic tour of the Indiana countryside. I can see how people complain that these things can get you seriously lost. It was a beautiful day to travel with the temps in the 50's so unusual for this time of the year for us. Usually it is 20 degrees and blowing snow, so we were thankful for a great day to travel so we could meet Bella.

Where did you say we were going Mom?

The HoundDogs (Winston and Amiee) would like to introduce their new fur-sister Bella to all their friends in Blogville.

Bella, comes from Louisville Kentucky and has a story to tell. Bella is 2 years old and has lived outside all her life. Well in September her family decided to move and I guess since she had been outside all her life, the just up and forgot her. They left her in the back yard for her to fend for herself. It was approximately 2 weeks before her first angel seen her (the neighbor lady). She began to take her food and water and see if she could get her to warm up and come to her. It took her nearly 2 weeks to work with her and get her to become her friend. She was able to finally catch her on 9/30/2011 and take her to the emergency vet. She then contacted Guardian Angel Basset Rescue about picking her up. GABR sent her second angel to pick her up and bring her to her new life. She came into GABR on 10/5/2011 skin and bones (just a little over 20 pounds), flea invested, tick invested and severe mange. We are so thankful that she had a few angels watching over her and GABR brought her back to life and encouraged us to open our hearts again.

After meeting Bella and spending lots of time with her at the local park, we decided that Bella would be a perfect for the Hound House. Winston and Amiee seemed to fall in love with her and were perfect siblings on their meeting. So after meeting her vet and signing some adoptions papers, we brought Bella home with us.

We were told that we should probably crate her in the BUV until they got to know each other, but she had other plans for that. Before we got out of the park she had busted out of the crate and found her space on the dog bed in the back of the BUV.

This is when we arrived home at 7:30 Friday night. We had 3 very excited hounds that had been sleeping for like 8 hours.

What is that blur in the back ground. That is Bella's fast moving body, oh keep in mind she really didn't have any idea how to play with other doggies when she was first brought into rescue. This would not be the case today. This girl knows how to play with the best of them.

Here are a few pictures of how things have been going since Friday. A few little bumps, but all is well and everyone is enjoying their new sibling.

Well finally the day came that our Mom decided we could open our Gift Exchange present that we got from pawticipating in Jazzi's gift exchange. We got gifts from Porter and Ernest (Two Scotties).

Oh, what do we have in here

We have hit the jack pot this Christmas. We got a pink pig which is a huge hit with both of the hounds. Winston actually brings it to us every time we come home to show us his Pink Pig.

We got fruitables (these are Amiee's knew found treat). Winston is pretty picky and has decided to let Amiee enjoy this whole bag of treats herself. Yum Yum, thanks Winston you are such a good brother.

Winston has decided to focus on the pig ears they received. They have never experienced pig ears so this is a very special treat for them. We actually cut them in half to start them out with, but they loved them. Of course we have nothing put blurry pictures of them playing with the pig and eating pig ears. And the card is just beautiful with them Scottie boys posing so nicely.

They were even sweet enough to send a little something for our Peep. She got a very nice basset magnet (which she didn't have yet) and has proudly displayed it on the fridge with all the other magnets.

We want to thank Jazzi for hosting the Gift Exchange, it is such a joy to meet new blog friends and to see our hounds get so excited with all the new things they get to try.

Christmas Cards Have Arrived

Christmas Cards have been arriving at our house for the last week and a half. Mom has just been sitting looking at them all, just amazed at the friends we have acquired while blogging. Well this past weekend she decided to hang them all up to get the full picture of just how many we have gotten. And oh my, we need a bigger wall.

Comment-A-Thon at Pip's Blog - In Memory of the Houston Pittie Pack

We recently heard the devastating news that last night there was a fire that destroyed the house of the Houston Pittie Pack. We heard from Mayzie "She tried desperately to get all the dogs out of the house but they were hiding under beds and in closets. She was only able to save Brinks and Bella. The rest – Guero, Coco Chanel, Tiger, Lucky and Shelby – are all now at the Bridge. Thankfully, all the humans were able to get out of the house safely."

Mayzie started a Chip-in, which is on the sidebar of our blog if you would like to make a donation to help assist them on getting back on their feet. We know that there is nothing we can do or say that will bring back their beloved fur-babies, but we hope to maybe bring a little comfort to them with a some green papers. We Won A Giveaway - Beethoven's Christmas DVD

Around Thanksgiving we entered a giveaway that was being hosted by Amazing Animal Lovers. All we had to do was leave them a comment on how much we really wanted this DVD (Beethoven's Christmas) for our collection. Well low and behold they drew our name as the winners. Mom is beyond excitement to have this DVD added to her collection.

Well it arrived on Saturday and boy did she tear right into that package and dig that DVD out of their. Of course, our Christmas Pressies from our gift exchange still sit waiting for us to open.

There was also a stocking full of toys included, which we totally forgot was coming with the DVD. Don't tell Winston and Amiee but these are tucked back for them for Christmas.

Treats - Treats - And More Treats

Our mail person has been very busy lately, bringing packages, cards and things for us and bills for Mom and Dad. BOL We are sorry about the lack of posts lately, Mom has been busy with work and then she doesn’t feel like looking at the computer thingy much since she looks at one all day long. But we have told her the blog needs some attention. We have lots of reporting and Christmas is around corner.

We have been collecting lots of new treats lately. Our first one is these yummy treats that we won from Hound Girl on one of her giveaways. She was right these treats are huge hit at the hound house and Winston is pretty picky. They were soft treats and kibble size and received an all paws up for flavor.

Thanks Hound Girl for offering this yummy give away.

Our second mail drop of treats came from the Slimmer Pugs. They just sent them just to send them to us, they are the most awesome pawsome blog friends. We thought maybe they were looking at the blog and noticed how sad we look and how we appear to be wasting away to nothing here, so they sent us some Yummy Chummies. Seriously that is the name of the yummy treats, Yummy chummies.

Oh, we absolutely loved loved these Yummy Chummies. They were so awesome and we give them a 4 paws from both of us as well. We are so excited to have such great blogging friends that think of us just to think of us. Thanks again, Slimmer Pugs for thinking of us and sharing your extra treats. If it wasn't for our great blog friends that just think of us, there is no way we would have ever gotten to try these most delicious treats.

We are slowly getting ready for Christmas at the Hound House. We are going to be working on the Christmas card photos or outtakes this weekend so we can get them printed in the mail next week. But in the mean time please enjoy our new Blog Header and Background that the talented Miss Judi over at SASS designed for us.

Cleo is still very heavy in our hearts and I wasn't quite ready to have her picture moved off the blog header just yet. So Miss Judi was so creative and incorporated her into the header for as an angel watching over Winston and Amiee.

We are so much in LOVE with our new header and design look for the holidays. If you are needing a new look for the holidays, just stop on over at the SASS blog and leave a comment. Show Us Your Bird - For Sarge

All week long Sarge has been hosting GIVE US THE BIRD and we are finally going to get to pawticipate on the final day. See our Mom has been looking outside all week for a picture of a bird, but has not found any. Little did she know we had birds all over the house, yes in the house. So here ya go Sarge we are giving you the BIRD today.

GABR Transport (Isabella, Gabe and Felix)

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to help GABR with another transport. This was actually the first time I have had bassets in the BUV on both ways of the trip. That sure makes a lot more fun then riding all by yourself.

A few months ago one of the Foster Parents for GABR was attacked by 2 big dogs in Indiana. He had just got done walking the neighbor girl home from visiting his bassets. The dogs came charging at him and he suffered over 70+ bite wounds and his one ear was pretty mangled but he is one tough cookie. He was able to finally get the dogs off him and get to his house where he could call for help. The dogs were PTS immediately and the owners could not prove any of their rabies shots so he must endure that know. He spent several days in the hospital then several weeks recuping with his family. During all this all his foster dogs and his own bassets had to be farmed out for some extra loving care while he recovered. Well he finally recovered and got we have been in the process of reuinting him with all his fur-babies.

Isabella was the last one of his fur-babies to make it back home and I was so honored to be part of her journey back to her Daddy. Isabella is a very special girl as she is one of the GABR Parvo puppies from about 5 years ago. Isabella was not even expected to walk let alone live through her experience. Marshall and his wife did such an awesome job with Isabella and she is one strong girl that walks like there is no tomorrow.

Well since Isabella was headed to Dwight for her transport back to Daddy, they decided to go ahead and move Gabe to his foster home as well. So Gabe and Isabella rode in the BUV to Dwight when they were turned over to another transporter for the rest of the trip. Gabe was going to his foster family and Isabella to her Daddy.

And this is Gabe. Gabe is new to GABR and was just making his way to his Foster home. He was about 5-6 years old and one of the sweetest soles. He loved to be talked to and to have tons of belly rubs. I also found out that he likes to stick his head out the window when he rides. This is not safe practice so we immediately rolled that window up.

Then on our trip back to Bloomington we brought Felix. Felix was making her way to St. Louis to be fostered by a wonderful lady from GABR. Felix has already have a potential adopter that is interested in her. She was the most gorgous basset and had a great figure. She had some meat on her bones.

During the week of November 7-11, Mazie is going to be honoring her Grampa J that passed away earlier this summer by having Rescue Me Week. For everyone that pawticipates in this event will have the opportunity to have 100 green papers donated to your favorite rescue/shelter. Mazie will be having a drawing the following week and 5 different blogs will win. That will be 5 different rescues/shetlers that will be so blessed to receive 100 green papers all because of Grampa J and his love for animals. How cool is that we get to honor Grampa J and help homeless pets find furever homes and then continue to help them with the dontation in Grampa J's honor.

One of our favorite rescues that we are heavily involved with is Guardian Angel Basset Rescue (GABR). Mom volunteers as a transporter for them and we move bassets from shelters, to their foster homes, to their furever homes.

Hello! My name is Droopy. I am an affectionate lady of 8 years old. I love to play with toys, take long walks and car rides. I will follow you anywhere you will let me go! I’m looking for an active outdoor family that is willing to take me out to see the world. Or if you prefer, we could just snuggle on the couch and watch TV. I don’t chew and I’m very friendly. I even know how to play fetch!

I'm used to being an only dog and getting all your attention. I do get a little excited when I see you and like to jump, so maybe older kids would be best. Please, no cats...I kind of make a fuss when I see one.

I hope to be hearing from you soon.

CRYSTAL

Crystal found her way to GABR by way of a shelter. She is 8 years old and a beautiful red and white. She has settled in very nicely with her foster family. She gets along great with her foster siblings which come in
all sizes. It is unknown about cats, but given her personality, I don’t think there would be any problems.  Crystal has been around children 6 months to 6 years and loves all the pats and rubs.

Crystal is short, even for a basset. She does not jump or attempt to get on the furniture or counter surf.  Give her a comfy pillow and she will snooze for hours. Because her legs are so short, she does have problems with stairs, one or two steps are fine. Crystal wants to be with her humans, maybe she is afraid of being abandoned and on her own again. If she thinks you have forgotten about her, she will gently swat you with her front paw to let you know she wants some attention.

She is a cuddler and would sit and let you pet her all day.    She can also be such a clown as she shakes and tosses her stuffed animals in the air and then chases them. Crystal is housebroken and does not need to be crated when you are gone. She goes to the door when she wants out and will bark to let you
know she is ready to come in. Crystal is very low maintenance and such a loving companion. Open your door, give her a chance and Crystal will fill your home and heart with love.

This week we are going to pawticipate in Mazie's Rescue Me Week.

Today we are going to highlight a pair of bonded brothers. They are currently in a foster home with GABR and would love to find their furever home.

Bean and Lincoln

Bean and Lincoln are two beautiful red & white boys who are looking for a home to take them together. The boys were used to running in a large country fenced in yard and chasing squirrels while their owners were at work. But when they moved into town, things changed. The neighbors didn't like them when they were outside and their owners didn't think it was fair to keep them in the house all the time. Now their Foster Mom reports they are very well behaved in the house and love to be petted and get belly rubs.

Bean is 5 y/o, house trained, good with other dogs, besides Lincoln and good with children. He has crooked front legs but they do not seem to hurt him. He's afraid of storms and is on medication. If not given the medication and left alone, he can be destructive. We recommend the new "anxiety wraps" that work like a charm!

Lincoln is a rescue and about 8 y/o. Three years ago he was returned to the humane society because he was afraid of strangers and extremely shy. Since then, that has improved and he is fine with everyone now, but he still hides if anyone picks up a broom or large stick. He is also house trained, good with other dogs, children and walks very well on leash.

This is a very loving and gentle pair. They'll need a home who is also very loving, understanding and gentle. Double your fun....take two!

Allie and Tucker are a bonded pair at 10 yrs young. Don't let the number fool you, because they are very energetic, playful, and love to be outside. They are both house trained and don't need to be crated when you're gone. They get along with all their foster brothers & sisters, cats & children. They
have no bad habits like some other bassets who counter surf or get into the garbage.

All they will require when they become part of your family is lots of tummy rubs & your unconditional love.

We had several great weeks in October for Illinois and Mom has been trying to keep us occupied and take lots of walks with us. Though we don't have a lot of great places to walk we have gotten to go to the people park a few times near our 2-legged brothers house. Other then that we just get to walk around the small pond that is located near our house, but this getting boring because we have done like those sniffs 1,000 times or more. So here are just some miscellanous pictures we have taken on some walks and stuff through the month of October. We hope we get a few more good days/weeks before the snow starts flying, as our Mom is a huge, did we say HUGE, wimp when it comes to the cold. So she says she is getting all our walks in know before the snow blows, yea right Lady....

I need to take a class to learn about all the various setting and stuff. Okay, enough babbling here ya go.

We don't really get into the whole dress up thing for Halloween. Last year we tried it and Winston could not be caught to get dressed, Winston ate Amiee's costume off her before we even got it on her. So this year we heard about The Cybersibes holding a Halloween event to help your local shelter. They are calling it Show Us Your Treat Jar. So this year we are going to pawticipate in this great Halloween event and show you our treat jar and then drop a bag of treats off at our local shelter as well. Won't you join us?

Here is our very first treat jar we used when we had all four of the hound dogs. We went through a lot more treats back then. Tabby and Cleo had to have a treat every time you walked in the door or they came inside from going potty or heck sometimes they even thought they needed a treat to go outside to potty. This treat jar has pretty much been retired since we are just down to Winston and Amiee for right know. They are not as demanding on the treats as the other two were.

This is a picture of our very favorite treat with our "retired" treat jar.

This is what our human Mom came up with for a new treat jar for us to use. These are more festive she says and goes with the holiday theme. In this jar we have some homemade peanut butter treats that our Mom makes for us. We get these crumbled up on our foodables before we eat.

This is another festive treat jar that holds our "favorite" soft treats. We have gotten very spoiled on these and prefer these over Mom's homemade treats anymore. Please don't tell her we said that though.

Mom tried to get a picture of Winston sitting by the treats we were going to donate to shelter but he thought she meant to inspect them. He would not sit still, see why we don't dress up.

(HA HA HA) We just wanted to show you really what is in our treat jar and how much we like them. Of course, this was the quickest we seen her snap that flashy beast so she could safe the treat jar.

It is with heavy hearts that we learned yesterday that our dear sweet blogging friends over at Tales and Tails had to help your beloved Lilac on her final journey. I sure know they could use some {{HUGS}} from everyone in blogville.

We have gotten to know the family of greyhounds and one Shepard very well through the blogging community. We actually had the privilege of meeting Bunny, Blueberry and Morgan on a nursing home visit one night. We never had the privilege to meet Lilac in person, but we felt we already knew her from her blog posts. As her Mom is the most elegant writer that I have come across. And we know from her blog she was the best Mom that Lilac could have and Mr. Taleteller the best dad. We also know that Blueberry, Bunny and Morgan will be feeling her loss as well as they attempt to adjust to a new "normal".

Lilac had the bestest of family (two-legged and four-legged) that brought her so much joy once she retired from her racing years. She had her pillows fluffed and her fan positioned just right everyday. Lilac just recently celebrated her Sweet 16 birthday on September 20, 2011 and she celebrated in style for sure.

GABR Past Transports (Droopy, Erin, Jack/Joe and Delilah)

Here are some pictures of some of the past transports I did while Cleo was sick. Just never got around to posting them, but I like to keep a log of who I transport. As my work donates $500 to the charity of my choice when I donate 40 volunteer hours in a calendar year.

So in July I transported Droopy into rescue. He was one of the 15 bassets that were adopted at the waddle this year.

Here is Erin, she was sweetie and had been waiting to get to a foster home for GABR. I transported her to her foster mom. She was also one of the 15 b bassets that was adopted at the waddle this year.

Monday (9/26/01) afternoon I got a call from GABR that there were two basset brothers in the Logan County Animal control and their time was up if we did not get them pulled by 4:00pm Monday. I immediately left work at 2:30 to make the 40 minute drive to get them, so we could get them the Dwight Clinic by 5:00pm so they could be checked out by Dr. Lou. These basset brothers will be 2 years old on November 9, 2011 AKC Registered (papers included) have been outside dogs living with a horrible breeder in Southern, IL. Actually GABR picked up 2 puppies several months ago from this same situation and did not know about these two boys hiding in the yard.

For being outside dogs for the entire life, you would have never known it. They climed in the back of the BUV picked up the toys I had for them and laid down and were perfect angels for their road trip. They had the longest ears, short noses, big ol feet and a whole lot of LOVE to give. I just wish they smelled a little better so I could have rally loved on them. Since they had been in the "Pound" for almost 2 weeks and being outside dogs, they had a very distinguished smell to them. You would think the "Pound" would consider giving them a bath to make them a little more presentable to potential adopters.

This was actually the first transport I have done since Cleo went to the Bridge. I felt she was sending me a sign that we had to save them and do it quick. But boy that Winston was not a happy camper when I returned home. He did not like the fact that I brought back smells from some other smelly hound and not from his Cleo.

Jack and Joe are a bonded pair and are still available for adoption at GABR

The most recent transport was for a basset/mix that had been sitting in a shelter in Missouri for the last 4 months. GABR had a new lady that was going to begin to foster for them. She pretty much wanted to foster with the strong potential to adopt. She wanted a middle age or older basset/mix, didn't have even look like a basset. Didn't care if she had any issues, just wanted to bring a new addition to her family. I have no doubt that they were meant for each other. This is Delilah, which I am sure found her forever on this day.

This would be Delilah's new ride. As her Mom said it was the Big "Green" Monster. A 1975 Buick LeSabre. Delilah jumped right in and sat in the drivers seat as in where do you want me to take you Mom.

How To Clean A Basset - Friday Humor

Last week our blog friends over at Two Pitties In The City did a posting on bathing your fur-kids. We got a lot of laughs out of this and having basset hounds, they are not real fond of the baths and are not the easiest to get in the tub. We do put a treat in the tub to encourage them to jump in there themselves, but getting them out presents some challenges with their long bodies being all slippery.

We probably should give them baths more often as Amiee looks like she is out rolling in the mud with the pigs some days. Winston is really hard to tell when he needs a bath as he doesn't have much white on him that gets dingy.

So we thought we would share Winston's cleaning technique that he enjoys the most.

As you watched the video you could probably see Amiee come up and then run away, she is no fan of the this type of cleaning at all. Actually the only basset hounds that I have had that have actually enjoyed this type of cleaning is both of my male bassets. Elliott my first male basset would follow me around the house with the vacuum until you stopped and ran it over him over and over. Well Winston does follow you around the house, but he sure will make it known that maybe he needs a little cleaning.

This year is the first time that we are pawticipating in the 2nd Annual National Taco Day hosted by Jazzi. This will not only be our first time of pawticipating but our first time to ever get Tacos. Can you believe that our Mom had no idea that Tacos were good for us furends as well.

Well we found out Monday after Mom got off work, just what eating Tacos was all about and man oh man, we have been missing some really good food ables from these places the humans call Fast Food. When Mom left work she headed over to Taco John's and ordered up two hard shell tacos with meat and cheese. Heck they were so amused that she was purchasing them for 2 basset hounds to take pictures of for National Taco Day they included some free tater tots that Mom loves so she was really excited.

It’s Momma………

It is so hard to believe that it has been one week since we helped you with your journey to the Rainbow Bridge. Winston is having a pretty hard time with you being gone. He looks for in all your little hiding places, he keeps wondering why I leave and you don’t come back with me. He cuddles with your blanket every night so he can smell you. He sits in the back yard and stares off to space and looks at us with such sad eyes, like he is saying “WTF have you done to my life”. I tell him how sorry I am that you have left us, but you must have been needed really bad at the RB for your life to be taken so sudden from ours. Amiee is being strong but she has a hard time in the mornings as you are no longer there for her to bark in your face, to make sure you get up and get things rolling for them in the mornings. Amiee is much more vocal and really speaks her mind a lot more. Neither one will eat right know, I just hope it is their way of dealing with you being gone and that will soon change.

The house is a very different quite with you not here. What I would give to hear that annoying bark you use to have. It use to drive me crazy but I miss it so much know. Cleo we want you to know how much joy you brought to our house and so glad you were able to show us the true meaning of "LOVE A RESCUE". You presented some challenges for us when we first brought you home that day in February 2006. You were 18 months old and had a death sentence at the shelter due to your aggression. What the heck, a basset with aggression NO WAY.........OH YEAH, but you soon learned how to appreciate the finer things in live and learned to LOVE right back.

I would have never imagined that within 15 months we would be from 4 fur-kids to 2 fur-kids. When we lost Tabby a year ago in June, I never thought you of all my hounds would be next to get sick and sick you were. You had some tummy issues that we were working on then the Auto Immune Disease and then finally that horrible diagnoses on September 1st that rocked our world to its inner core. They said you had the C-Monster and it was so far advanced that we had limited time with you. WTF are they talking about? You were just outside in the back yard in the 100 degree days walking the yard looking for snakes, running and playing with Winston, going for walks and golf cart rides. This could not be possible, not my Cleo.

I pray that we gave you the best 5 years of your life while we had you, it was 5 more years that you would not have had if our first basset Precious - ATB did not lead me to start volunteering for our Humane Society. I pray that I was able to make your last days as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. I pray that one day I will see the sign that you are okay and having lots of belly rubs, treats and wonderful sunshine to run free in everyday. I pray that you have found Tabby, Precious, Elliot and all the other wonderful fur-babies that were taken from us to soon. I would pray for you to come back to me, but I just know that is not possible.

Oh and Cleo, you would not believe the support that I have received from our dear blogville friends. Mango/Dexter but a very nice post about you crossing the bridge. You even have some great Cat blogging buddies as well, as CB but up a very nice post as well. And then our dear friends over at SAS created this beautiful memorial picture for you.

I have been overwhelmed with the sweetest comments and have yet to respond to everyone, but I have read each one over and over. I just can't get over the support from our blogville friends that have never even met us in person, but just from reading our silly stories. It brings us comfort to know that you were so loved by so many and will be missed by so many. You have lots of fur-ends at the RB so just remember to play nice and mind your manners.

Cleo, please know how much you touched our lives and how very much we miss you each and every day. Until we meet again, we will love you to the moon and back and treasure our memories of you for a lifetime.

Well it has been a little since we have posted any thing but Wordless Wednesday pictures. We decided to not attend the 2011 Illinois Basset Waddle this year due to Cleo's illness. We felt it would be to stressful for her and frankly last week we thought she was running out of steam. But on Wednesday (Sept 14th), my birthday she perked back up and began eating again.

She is know taking her meds again twice a day, but she will only eat scrambled eggs and ham at this time. She eats about every 2 hours to help keep the acid in her tummy down. The vet suggested today that we add a little bread in between meals to help with acid control. She does not appear to be in pain, but gets very tired when she goes out to potty. She still greets you in the morning or at the door with her tail held high and waggin. She is a fighter and holding strong.

So we have included a few pictures of Cleo enjoying some sunshine and just chilling with her fur-siblings.

It's Waddle Time

We have been total slackers on our fund raising this year for the 2011 Illinois Basset Waddle. We have got to get busy and raise some funds for the homeless basset hounds. Every year Guardian Angel Basset Rescue holds the Illinois Basset Waddle in Dwight, Illinois. This consists of two days of fun activities for bassets and their humans September 17-18, 2011

Saturday is a day of fun filled events with games, basset races, basset socialization as there are about 200 bassets that are allowed off leash in the GABR Park for the day. Then on Sunday we have costume contests, wagon contests and then we Waddle. The bassets will lead the the Dwight Harvest Day parade off with about 1,000+ bassets waddling the streets of Dwight. All in all the actual parade route is about 10 blocks, but the bassets actually have to walk about 5 blocks to their starting point, and then if they have it in them they walk back to the GABR Park. Well we have done that in the past and have found out that is just a little much for them little legs to handle. For the last 2 years know we have opt to get on the "Poop" out wagon for a ride back to the GABR park. We really don't consider ourselves "Poop-Outs" because we actually made it the total distance, we are only getting on this wagon for our humans sake.

We also understand how tight things are for some people this year and fully understand. We just wanted to bring this wonderful event to your attention in case you have a $1.00 or $2.00 to spare and want to help a "Homeless Basset Hound" out. This organization is near and dear to our hearts as our human transports for them. She goes and picks them poor babies up and brings them for vet care or to their foster homes. She has even participated in a few transports where she was actually delivering the basset to their fur-ever home. She really likes those trips and are very near and dear to hear heart. We always blog about our transports and I would say that 90% of the ones we have assisted with this year have been adopted.

Cleo Update - 9/6/2011

First off, I would like to say “THANKS” to everyone for all the nice comments on our post for Power Of The Paw for Cleo. I am sorry that I was not in a position to give more details that day, but as you read through our update you will find out that we were pretty devastated with the news that we were dealt last Thursday (9/1/2011). Please bear with me while you read through my post, it was hard to right and sometimes I seemed all over the place but I tried to give you a picture of what happened since her last chiropractor appt and how we got to where we are today.

The week of August 24, Cleo had another Chiropractor appointment and also received Acupuncture as well. She had held her adjustment from the previous time pretty well but had slipped out alignment in a few places. She was adjusted then Dr. A thought maybe Acupuncture in the right areas might stimulate her Immune system. Cleo does so well and just seems to melt in Dr. A.’s arms. She pretty much rested during the acupuncture treatment. Here are few pictures that I could snap before the batteries went dead.

Cleo had to lay still for 15 minutes while this treatment was taking place

Cleo held her own, began to eat like a horse (normal for them steroids), happy girl even was getting out for a few short walks on the cooler evenings. All until Wednesday evening, when she decided to stop eating all together. I had just gone to the vets on Tuesday and picked up a whole new case of I/D soft dog food for her, told the vet how she was a munch hound and seemed to be doing well.

I did notice on Sunday/Monday evening when she would lay flat out you could begin to see her belly bulge; well this didn’t appear normal to me since she has lost so much weight. Also on her left side there appeared to be a very distinct knot and when I would touch it Cleo would get up, like it hurt. As you can see in the pictures below what I am talking about, with the amount of weight Cleo has lost (12 pounds) we had not been seeing the "pot belly" effect until just late last week.

I really could not feel anything in her tummy, but that was just not right looking to me. She had an appoint already scheduled for Thursday afternoon for blood draws so I thought we will just make sure that Dr. T checks it out. Wednesday evening she said NO to food, meds, cheese, treats. I did have some chicken in the freezer so I cooked that up and boiled that for and she did eat that, of course. Well I went ahead and called Dr. T Wednesday before he closed and informed him I was bringing Cleo in first thing and not waiting till the afternoon. I told him she wasn’t eating and something just isn’t right.

Cleo got some very extensive testing done Thursday morning, blood draws, x-rays of her tummy, back, chest, pretty much her entire body was x-rayed Thursday (9/1). Unfortunately, all these test have finally found the under laying problem to why she has developed the Auto Immune Deficiency.

Our family received the shock of our life Thursday (9/1) and our world was rocked to the core. Cleo has been diagnosed with a very fast growing CANCER (Metastatic Hemangiosarcoma) that has been found in her Spleen, Liver, Spine and Lungs. This form of cancer is usually so far advanced before it is detected, that there is little hope for any options after it is found. We were told on Thursday that we may have 4-6 months left with her IF we removed her Spleen and started Chemo. We have decided that that is not something we want to put Cleo through just for a few extra months with her. We feel that her quality of life is more important to us right know then putting her through a surgery and drugs that would make her feel horrible for the remaining time we have with her. We will have good days and bad days, but will enjoy every one of them to their fullest and we will know in our hearts when the time has come to let Cleo rest. But for the time being we take it day-by-day and thank God for everyday that we can continue to enjoy her.

We at the The HoundDogs household, appreciate all our thoughts and prayers and continue to send us the Power of the Paw because we sure could use it about know.

Thankful "Cleo" Thursday

Today is Thankful Thursday at the HoundDogs House

Today, Cleo had a follow up appointment to have her blood rechecked to see if the Predisone (steroids) have jump started her again to rebuild her RBCs. She is always such a trooper, she is always ready to go for a BUV ride, I can distract the other two hounds where I can just have Cleo walk out the front door with no collar or leash (we live on a dead end road/last house) so this is okay. She no longer attempts to chase the outdoor cats that are lounging on the porch. She walks right out to the BUV and waits for you to open the back end and lift her up. We have a new/used folding ramp coming next week from a friend that is going to be great for her. She lays down in the BUV so nicely, waits to get out of the BUV, walks with her tail held high as we enter the vet office. Heck she doesn't even need to have a bandage on any more after her blood draws, such a big girl.

Has you can see we are ready to call "Houston" and let them know we are moving closer to the launching pad.

I am sure all are blog friends have seen a blood test or two on our fur-kids. Well as you can see last Saturday (8-13-11), Cleo almost crashed due to her low, low RBC. As you can see from today's (8-18-11) Cleo has increased her RBC by several percentages. The numbers you are seeing are a percentage of the RBCs that are in her system, today Cleo is at 27.5%. A normal range for a dog is 37-50%, Cleo has a long way to go to "normal" range but we are so "Thankful" for the gain she made to day. Dr. T was quite impressed with her gains, but said she is still considered an "Acute" case at this point and we may see the numbers go back down again. She will remain on the same amount of Steroids she has been on for the last week and we will recheck her blood in 10 days.

And also, Dr. T said that after this weekend we can begin to take Cleo on short little walks when it is cool in the evenings. Cleo wants to let the vet know that is all fine and dandy, but she will prefer to stick to the golf cart rides.

We want to say "Thanks" to everyone for all the wonderful comments, POTP and good healing vibes. We know they are doing their work on Cleo for sure.

Cleo Update (An Adjustment Doesn’t Fix It All) New Diagnosis

Well once again here I sit typing and reaching out to my blogging friends in blogville for some much needed Power Of The Paw and some words of advice for Miss Cleo and myself. I believe I “jinxed” myself and got way too excited about the great improvements that happened with Cleo. I guess this time I may have counted my chickens before they hatched.

For starters my husband and I hardly ever go out and do things, but this past weekend was his birthday so I splurged for a movie and hopefully dinner for us. Our fur-kids eat supper between 5-6pm every night. Well we decided to go to a movie at 5:00pm so I decided to wait and feed the dogs after the movie was over. I gave Cleo her meds for her tummy acid, thinking this would keep her tummy calm so she would be ready to eat when we got home. It was only going to be like 45 mins after their normal feeding time that they would eat, I felt this was not a big deal.

Well, we received a very frantic call from our son around 6:30 just as the movie was getting over. He stopped out at the house to pick up his laundry and found Cleo laying there unable to get up and move. He is total panic which places me in total panic and we rush home, to find Cleo barking, jumping and running around like hey what is all the fuss about. She is still pretty wobbly in the back leg area, so I pretty much decide she must have twisted herself or just had a little spasm or something. Just must be getting time for another adjustment or something. So I went ahead and feed them and she seemed to be okay, just moving slow and not much energy. I did notice that her gums were a very light pink color, which I know is not a good sign. Of course, I didn’t sleep hardly at all Friday night worrying about her and how many hours till the vet opened so I could call.

Saturday morning came and Cleo seemed to be a little perky and ate well, but I still called the vet. After talking with Dr. T. and telling him what I was seeing he had me bring her back in for an EKG and more blood work. Cleo’s EKG came back great (thank you GOD), but her blood counts were not so good. Cleo’s RBC has dropped again after rebounding just a few days prior. Instead of 2 points up she was 3 points down from where the blood work on Tuesday was. Dr. T has always shown concern and has been trying to fully understand why Cleo’s RBC is so low but shows that she is trying to make little baby RBCs.

Well it was today, Saturday August 13th, my husband’s birthday that we have found out that Cleo has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) formally known as Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia or AIHA. There is no explanation has to how or why one animal will get this over another.

Cleo was given an injection of “happy juice” steroids and sent back home with her anti-acid, amoxcillian, and predisone again. From all the information that I have read, the heavy dose of steroids is the only way to begin to fight this and get it under control. There is known cure for IMHA at this time, you can only manage it and “pray” that it goes into some sort of remission to where she can maintain a good quality of life. We are NOT giving up on Cleo, and Cleo continues to fight so we will do whatever we can to help maintain this disease. We will continue to work Dr. T and Dr. A Cleo’s Canine Chiropractor to determine the best course of treatment for her and hopefully move to reducing her steroid intake. The main thing we must do right now is get her body to reproduce RBCs and keep them. Unfortunately, the only way is for to take heavy doses of Steriods. She tires very easy, has a slight cough from the acids in her tummy. She is weak at times, but then has a burst of energy at times as well. Her gums are very pale, but the white of her eyes look good. We are just taking it one day at a time and we will have her RBC retested at the end of the week to see if it has come up. We are feeding her small amounts of ID food every two hours to help keep the acid in her tummy under control. This also seems to help her keep her energy levels up and keep her gums a little pinker.
